Located at the hill in the heart of the city this 8th century fort can be viewed from any part of the Malaga town. The top of the hill is where the castle of Gibralfaro is and downhill lies Alcazaba Castle. They are connected by a long ramp. From the castle of Gibralfaro, the castle of Alcazaba looks like a garden. On the foreground of Alcazaba, ruins of 2nd century roman theatre can be seen which are currently being restored by the archaeologists.
Build using roman material this fort has two thick wall enclosures for a strong defense against the invaders. In ancient times the vault gate or “Puerta de la Bóveda” was used to gain entry into the fort, but now you can enter the fort using elevators. The pathways take you through beautifully landscaped gardens with lovely fountains.
To access the inner quarters of this fort - which contain the main palace - one has to enter thorugh the Grenade Quarters gate. A visit to the Archaeological Museum located inside the castle can answer any questions.
