This beautiful church was built nearby a mosque between 1528 and 1782, nearly 200 years. The church is often referred to as “La Manquita” as the church has a tower which stands out and adds to the beauty of the church.Initially the plan was to build the church with two such towers however due to constraints only one arm could be built it is believed that the money reserved for the construction was given to the US to fight against British.
The choir of the church is made of cedar and mahogany. The interiors of the church have been inspired from renaissance and baroque styles. The church has statues of saints carved by a famous Spanish sculptor - Pedro de mena.
Adjacent to the church is Iglesia del Sagrano which is built on the site of the mosque. Cathedral facilities can be reached at 952 215917.
