Lying in the foreground of Alcazaba the remains of the Roman theatre, dating back to the first century, were only excavated in 1951. It’s believed that they have been built during the rule of Augustus and were used till the 3rd century. Accidentally discovered while renovating the Malaga library the roman theatre is a massive structure measuring more then 31 meters in width and the sittings are 16 meters high.
Being a site of prime importance, lots of excavation work is going on at the site to convert it into a venue where the summer concerts can be held. Every effort is being made to retain the original structure and to use the same roman stones for reconstructing this ancient heritage. Due to the heavy construction work which is undergoing at this site the visitors can currently only overlook this theatre through a fence.
