Castillo de Gibralfaro, constructed by the Muslim ruler Yusuf in 14th century, is located very close to Alcazaba. Constructed originally as a fortress to defend the Alcazaba this castle appears like a lighthouse in mountains and this is why it is named Gibralfaro which means lighthouse on a mountain. You can see a path connecting Gibralfaro castle with the eastern side of Alcazaba.
You get a panoramic view of the entire Malaga town from this castle explaining its construction for defense purposes. Within the castle one can see ruins of a mosque which was later converted to church after Isabella and Ferdinand reconquered Malaga.
In the premises the visitors can also see 40 meters deep Arabic airon well and lookout turrets. What would once have been a gunpowder arsenal now exhibits military weapons, officers uniforms and artifacts of daily use. Most of the part of this castle seems to be a garden so commening when plants are in season is recommended
